COPD – What is it?
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is not a single lung disease but a group of diseases. Emphysema, chronic bronchitis and asthmatic bronchitis are the primary diseases that make-up COPD. Obstruction to airflow, which interferes with normal breathing, is the main characteristic these diseases share. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in America. In 2002 COPD claimed 120,000 deaths (source: National Center for Health Statistics).
Effects of Smoking
Smoking is the primary risk factor for COPD, occurring in over 90% of cases. Other risk factors such as heredity, air pollution and childhood respiratory infections pale in comparison to the effects of smoking. Because women are now smoking in larger numbers, the percentage of women with COPD has increased significantly.
